I had been working at the company for 3 years when everything started to change. First, they fired the entire management team and hired a team of very young directors, all of whom had studied abroad.

Then we were given the news that the production line would be moving to the United States as a strategy.

I had gotten that job through Pablo, the owner of the company, we both studied together at university and became good friends; I've never been good at jobs, I find it hard to follow instructions and obey... many times I realized that I wasn't being fired because I was friends with Pablo.

When I found out that the factory would be closing, I panicked, I was in a terrible moment: my credit cards were maxed out, my mortgage was only half paid, a divorce that I still hadn't finished paying for, and my four children were in a very expensive school. I found out that many of my colleagues were being laid off with a very good severance package, but that amount wasn't enough for me, I needed to have a fixed income... besides, at 40 years old and with bad references, I suspected that no one would hire me.

In the midst of this uncertainty, one day in the cafeteria, I ran into Ulises, a 29-year-old coworker, the typical handsome guy with a good body, but not too bright, but he's so nice and pleasant that no one would dare to fire him.

"Why are you looking so down, dude?" he asked me with his usual silly smile, I turned to look at him with the urge to slap him.

"Don't mess with me, Ulises, what are you asking, they're going to fire us all," I said.

"But you're friends with the big boss, right?" he said with a smile - "surely he'll take care of you in the US."

"It's not that easy," I replied.

Ulises approached me in a mysterious way and in a very low voice told me, "Don't go saying I told you, but there's a special human resources program that they're calling some of us for, you can ask Pablo to consider you for that program."

"What's it about?" I asked.

"I don't know," he replied, "but at least you'll have a job."

"Do you have to move to the US?" I insisted.

"No, it's to work here with the executives," he replied.

"How? Are the offices going to stay open?" I asked hopefully.

"Don't say I told you," Ulises replied, "but that's why Pablo hired young directors... because he wanted them to be able to adapt to managing the company remotely... I heard they're going to do home office work."

Here and now, my boss finishes answering his emails. He pushes his chair back and stands up to stretch - "half an hour of relaxation, fag," he says - "I want you in the dungeon on the cross, immediately," I get up and head to a cross attached to the wall at the back of the dungeon.
