II. Interdependence

Days, weeks, months passed. At first Noel was almost always tense, but over time, since Ricardo did not reproach him for anything and he saw him satisfied with what he did, he began to feel more secure and then even relaxed. The soldier did everything for the colonel: cleaned the house, his bedding, helped him dress, took care of the details of his uniform, cleaned his boots every day.

As he got to know him, he admired him more and more. He was the person he spent the most time with, and he heard him in meetings with the officers and non-commissioned officers. He was amazed at how, without raising his voice, he made it clear whether what he was saying was an order, advice, or simply a statement. He needed nothing more; everyone understood him perfectly. Besides, his gaze was very expressive. Noel felt comfortable in his presence. He had a certain paternal deficit, not because his parents had divorced, but because his father worked a lot, spent many hours away from home, and when he was home he did not pay much attention to him. That admiration for the colonel grew; it was no longer just fulfilling the duties assigned to him as personal assistant—he actually enjoyed helping, in every way, that man he admired.

Ricardo also felt good with Noel. He did not say it to him, but somehow he let him know. The soldier had learned to interpret his looks, his way of speaking, of addressing him. After three months, with so much time shared, he knew a lot about his interests, his tastes. Around that time the colonel had an accident, a fall, which caused him a grade II-III sprain in one ankle. The doctor, knowing him, did not hesitate to immobilize the joint with a cast; he knew there was no other way to guarantee rest.

Noel received one more task, which he took on without any problem: he would have to help him go to the bathroom, for his needs, and even more so when it came time to shower. Now he saw him completely naked, and not only briefly while changing; now he saw him for longer periods of time.
