In psychiatry, sexual masochism involves acts in which a person experiences sexual arousal from being humiliated, beaten, tied up, or subjected to mistreatment. Sexual masochism disorder is sexual masochism that causes significant distress (including bodily or psychological harm) or that substantially affects daily functioning.

What is happening with our slaves? How do Painboy and Cuan live through this extreme experience? How do they cope with it?

Both live it intensely, but with substantial differences.

Cuan had sought for years to be a slave; he knew and recognized himself as submissive, accepted his inferior condition, and it was he who requested and accepted being trained as a slave. He sought it with absolute dedication and total surrender, and he feels total and absolute devotion for his owner; he knows he is his property and fully assumes that the Master can do whatever he wants with him, without limits or restrictions.

Phillipe, or Painboy if preferred, is a diametrically different case: he was hunted by a sadist who discovered his potential and exploited his attributes. He was not born a slave; he was conditioned as one, severely educated to obey, serve, please, to suffer, and above all: to be punished. Real and extreme punishment.

With a privileged physique, his Master activated in him the responses to turn him into a submissive being with high physical performance and an almost total attitude of surrender and service. Almost, because the slave still had traces of autonomy, showed desires for recognition, demonstrated self-pride, was competitive, displayed envy, and felt jealousy toward others. That bothered and unsettled his owner, who was subjecting him to a treatment to eradicate those behaviors, with results still uncertain. That is why this extreme test could also help break him definitively.

But there were other differences between the two slaves: Cuan had been a simple bank employee, without major personal expectations, from a working-class family, who led a rather mediocre life. Phillipe, by contrast, came from a well-off family, was an exceptional athlete, a swimmer who had nearly participated in the Olympics, a winner, a qualified lawyer who was specializing in international commercial law and acquiring expertise in investment contracts. His expectations were high, and that is why his profile was so interesting to the Masters. His owner exploited him and handled him at will, and he was a jewel proudly displayed, destined to make a name as an animal for pleasure and abuse.

And here both slaves were, in the hands of DHH to subject them to new tests. They were exhausted, it is true, but not at the limit of their strength; they could still give more.
