Thomas and Mark, after starting their romantic relationship, discover together the deep happiness that their cohabitation and the care of Max bring them. Mark, excited about this new stage, decides to release Kitty forever, putting an end to that unconscious part that inhabited him. Thus, Kitty ceases to exist, and Mark feels complete, more connected to himself and to Thomas.
The three begin to live together as a true family, sharing space, affection, and responsibilities. This cohabitation strengthens their bonds and brings them a stability they had never experienced before.
However, a significant doubt soon arises: Will Max need company? Max had lived intensely his exclusive relationship with Thomas, and now with the constant presence of Mark and Luis (as Max, of course), he probably observes the lack of another friend or companion at his level. The question opens the door to reflect on whether they will bring a new character into the family or strengthen the emotional bond between them to cover Max's potential emotional need.
The dilemma of companionship
In the first weeks, the family routine flowed harmoniously. Max received pampering, games, walks, and constant care from both men. One afternoon, while Thomas and Mark were having coffee, the issue came up:
"I don't know if Max is as happy as we think," Thomas said, caressing the cup with unease. "Sometimes I feel like he misses something... or someone."
Mark nodded, his gaze falling on Max, who was trotting around the garden with his ball, but without his usual enthusiasm.
"Maybe he needs another dog... or at least other companionship, someone who understands him in his own way," Mark suggested.
The idea generated conflicting emotions: excitement, fear of change, even subtle jealousy about the space another being could occupy in the family dynamics.
The search for answers
Thomas immersed his doubts in forums and books about animal behavior and affective bonds of domestic dogs. He discovered that most dogs are social animals and thrive with companionship of their own species. Although Max was unique, his instincts and need for socialization remained those of a dog.
Mark also investigated and proposed finding a dog that could connect with Max in his particular style. Both debated for hours about adopting a puppy, an adult dog, or even training a friend to play certain roles with Max. They decided to go step by step, always prioritizing Max's well-being.
The adaptation process
The first visit to the shelter was an emotionally charged experience. Thomas and Mark went together, leaving Max at home. They spoke with volunteers about t...
